US Defense Secretary Patrick Chanahan described the negotiations between US officials and the Taliban movement on peace in Afghanistan as “encouraging”.
“The results so far are encouraging,” Shanahan told reporters ahead of his talks with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Monday, adding that he was briefed on the progress of the negotiations.
On the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, Shanahan confirmed that he was not commissioned to plan a complete withdrawal from the country.
Representatives of the Taliban movement agreed with US negotiators on Saturday on a draft peace agreement. Taliban officials have said the draft agreement calls for the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan within 18 months, while a US official denied discussing any timetable for withdrawal.
